Frontend Engineer (React)
HelpDocs Apply
Slack Es6 Jquery React Git

Headquarters: Remote

As a Frontend Engineer on the Product team you'll be working closely with the company founders to create new features and update existing code in React. We have a bunch of React apps so you'll have a pretty varied day to day.

About the role

The main responsibilities of this role:
  • Create new user-facing features in React
  • Maintain legacy libraries in jQuery (there's not many I promise) and ES6+
  • Maintain existing React code and fix bugs in production
  • Create and maintain extensions, integrations, and other frontend user-facing products
  • Write good, readable, clean, testable code (with tests 😏)
  • Test your code in our staging environments before deploying to production
  • Identify areas we could improve in the product and share with the team
As a member of a small team you'll also need to get stuck into things outside your wheelhouse. Here’s some examples of tasks you might be asked to do as part of your role:
  • Respond to customer technical support emails and escalations from the Customer Education team
  • Work with the rest of the Product team to design new features and APIs
  • Deploy code to our production Kubernetes clusters through our CI/CD pipeline
  • Write technical documentation for the team and users

  • ~ 28 paid vacation days per year. Take the time you need to be healthy and happy. We’re not counting—this is honor based.
  • One fully-paid team retreat. We’ll go somewhere nice for a week and HelpDocs’ll pick up all your expenses.
  • $300/m healthcare stipend toward private health insurance
  • 12 weeks fully paid parental leave
  • $70/m towards a gym membership or other fitness activities
  • $2500 equipment allowance given every 3 years.

The range for this role is $54-78k per year. We don’t pay on location. We have bands based on experience. You’ll be retained as a full-time consultant and responsible for your own taxes.

Job requirements
  • You have a personality and you're not afraid to show it 🦄✨
  • You're fluent (like a native) in English and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • You communicate thoughtfully and inclusively. You take what others say with positive intent. Even if you think they’re being an asshole.
  • You see diversity and inclusion as something to be celebrated. Something non-negotiable. That translates to the language you choose, your attitude towards other people, and to your deliverables at work.
  • You're not afraid of getting your hands dirty in different areas of the business
  • You thrive on direct feedback, positive and negative, and are constantly working to be the best you can be. You’re happy giving direct feedback too.
  • You're a self-starter. Working in the gray with a ton of uncertainty doesn't phase you.
  • You're happiest working remotely and have been doing so for at least a year
  • You have experience communicating asynchronously across timezones through tools like Twist, Threads, Slack, Zoom, etc.
  • You’re passionate about your work and customer-focused
  • You have access to rock-solid high speed internet and love showing your face on video calls with the team and customers
  • You want to treat HelpDocs as your full time role, you aren't currently studying, and you don’t want this as a side gig alongside another role or freelancing.
  • You have 2+ years experience writing React code that's used in a production environment
  • You love experimenting with new tools and suggesting ways to use them to improve the product
  • You're comfortable in the command line working with CLIs, git, etc.
  • You know how to test code and identify bugs (and hopefully an idea of how to fix them)
We know this list can be intimidating. If you’re missing a few things from this list but still think you'd be awesome at the role we'd love to see your application anyway (just mention what you're missing in the "Anything else you wanna tell us" question).

If you think you'd be a good fit for more than one of our roles there's no need to apply twice. Just add a note in your application you'd like to be considered for that too.

Data Migration Specialist & PHP Developer
EmpowerDB Apply
Jquery Mysql Php Javascript Css

Headquarters: North America

We are a cloud based database company serving non-profits, mostly Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault support providers.  We are looking for a person to help with two tasks:

Data Migration

Many of our customers are switching to us from some other system.  We get data in every shape, size, format, level of complexity, and level of cleanliness that you can imagine.

We have built a special data import tool to help facilitate the data migration process.  So there's minimal writing code to teach the system that "Female" should be code 1, "Male" should be code 2.  Etc...  The tool that we've built makes that process incredibly easy.  However, knowledge of PHP and MySQL are needed to understand how that tool is working and help fill in any gaps.

What's NOT incredibly easy is being able to look at the source files coming in, understanding what that data is actually describing... looking at the way our database is structured, understanding what our database is describing... and figuring out how to get the various pieces from the previous system to ours.  It takes a lot of creativity, problem solving, and training to work out how to properly import all data with the least chance of data being lost or duplicated.

We are already fully versed in how this process works and are simply looking for additional support.  We are looking for people who are open to learning our tool and adapting to our ways of accomplishing this incredibly important task for our customers.

Strong communication skills and English ability would be a valuable asset.

PHP Developer

We are also looking to hire someone who could also help out with our general product development and debugging.

We use PHP (no framework), JavaScript, jQuery, CSS, and HTML.  That's basically it.  We intentionally keep it simple.

Our main needs revolve around building custom reports and making additional tools for importing and exporting data. But there will certainly be a very mixed bag of tasks that you'll be given.

Job Structure

You would be an independent contractor.

We are flexible on whether this would be a part time or full time position.  We would much rather focus on finding someone who was a good fit for our company than trying to find someone who can work a certain number of hours.

Applicants can be from anywhere in the world.  But we'd expect you to work some hours overlapping with our US Eastern Time schedule.

To Apply

Simply fill out our application form here:

We'll reach out to you within days if we feel like you could be a good fit.

We will not respond to recruiters or follow up emails.  Please no emails!!!

Senior Software Engineer
Spreedly Apply
Rails Elixir Kafka Ruby Riak

Headquarters: Spreedly

Spreedly is a rapidly growing, growth private-equity funded digital payments company with headquarters located in downtown Durham, North Carolina. We've developed a high volume, global solution that makes the payment ecosystem better by bringing together a diverse range of merchants and solution providers from around the world.

Our employees help build a culture that values independence, transparency, and collaboration in a digital-first communication environment. We hope you do your best work at Spreedly and find a mature workplace striving to support the ebb and flow of work-life harmony.

Our list of "amazing functionality that customers will happily pay us for if we can just get it implemented..." is growing faster than we can check things off, and we need help from an experienced engineer that can hop into a high-functioning, experienced team and start learning and contributing quickly.

When you start at Spreedly (think first 6-12 months), you'll be spending 90%+ of your time working right on the product team building functionality for customers. Building product at Spreedly is a bit unique in that our main product is a payments API used by other developers. So while "designing a UI" may mean exactly what it sounds like (creating administrative and analytics tools), it often means thinking through how YOU would want a given API to work if you were using it. "Adding a feature for a customer" often means working through how to securely enable a developer to do something interesting with a credit card number. Super challenging and fun, we think! And since we work with credit card data on a daily basis, thinking about security is a way of life at Spreedly, as is building sustainable processes to keep that information safe (and our auditors happy).

What we're looking for in a senior engineer is somebody who's excited by jumping into pretty complex technical problems and making sense of them. We regularly deal with encryption, encoding, and security, all within the context of a distributed system. You don't have to be an expert in any of those aspects, but you should be really open to learning about them. Once you've gotten your feet under you and understand the domain well enough, we'd like you to mentor junior engineers and help them tackle the task at hand using pragmatic software practices. We're looking for people that are good at their job who are also are interested in elevating the people around them.

What We're Looking For
  • A track record of delivering well-crafted software
  • A willingness to be a generalist and the curiosity to try new things you've never done before
  • Excitement about building products for Spreedly's customers, who are primarily businesses doing commerce and their developers who are using our API's and toolkits
  • Excellent written communication skills, and a willingness to use them to document your work as necessary
  • The ability to operate autonomously, sorting your own immediate priorities out of the ever-shifting needs of a startup environment
  • Confidence in your ability to learn new tech as necessary. Today we work primarily with Ruby, Rails, Elixir, Phoenix, Riak, Kafka, Postgres, Redis, and Linux ... but are always pragmatically evaluating new languages and tools

What We Offer
  • Competitive salary
  • Outstanding medical and dental benefits (we pay 100% of monthly premiums for employees + families)
  • Life and long-term disability insurance
  • Medical and dependent care FSA
  • Optional vision insurance
  • Open PTO policy
  • Remote friendly work environment. Even our local employees are remote 3 days per week!*
  • Tues./Thurs. are in-office days for local employees - the rest of the week employees are free to work wherever they choose*
  • Paid lunches on in-office days for local employees*
  • Quarterly visits to HQ for remote employees*
  • 12 weeks paid Family Leave
  • Matching 401k plan
  • Monthly digital lifestyle stipend
  • Yearly professional development opportunities
  • *All employees are currently working fully remotely due to COVID19

We're constantly striving to have the fairest and most productive hiring process possible. We want to ensure that every candidate is treated equally and our interactions are designed with that goal in mind. If you want to get a sense for what your application process will look like, we'd encourage you to read the following: Stop Hazing Your Potential Hires and Programming Puzzles Are Not the Answer.

If this at all sounds interesting, we'd love to hear from you!

Spreedly is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to fostering, cultivating and preserving a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion. We actively work to drive out even unintentional discrimination in our hiring processes via practices like blindly graded work samples, structured interviews, and diversity awareness training.

Due to the sensitive nature of what Spreedly does- handling payment data- candidates must complete a successful background check. If you have concerns along those lines, please discuss with us sooner rather than later- we do not want you to waste time in the hiring process and get disqualified at the end if we can help it.

This position is open to candidates in the contiguous US only. We are not set up to support remote employees from CA, NY, WA or outside the contiguous US. All applicants must have a US work visa.

We appreciate your interest in our company. Because of the high volume of resume flow, we will only respond to those candidates that we think will be a potential fit.
